ABOUT AN AGE (2016)

FEATURE FILM

we made a feature film! that was wild... almost a decade in the making too... evan & i began writing a film about reaching the cusp of adulthood & beginning to form ideas about what actual real life might involve / we both grew up over the years we wrote & planned, developed more serious bedrooms, didn’t drink quite as many beers during the writing sessions, became tired earlier in the evening, etc. i was 19 when we started scheming in our lunch breaks at borders book store.. and definitely 28 years old when we had the premiere at nova cinema in melbourne ! 

we spent years on the script, then held auditions to find six actors / a crew of about fifteen & an entire month up on a farm in northern victoria for the shoot, many many sessions of editing & colour grading & then radio interviews and emails about distribution.. / we followed it to orlando film festival, where it was selected to screen in 2018, and won ‘best ensemble.’ it screened too at setting sun film festival in 2019 & is available to watch online via amazon prime / watch it here, or visit the imdb page here

a tribute to a very excellent of montreal song.. this 10 min track is the kind of musical experience you don’t come out of the same as you went in & hence a real journey of a video tribute ! it began with a series of ink sketches of the powerlines near my brunswick home which then snowballed into me myself becoming powerlines... naturally...

thanks to greta w-c m’s equally incredible housemate & camera skills for helping make this happen

adeline has quickly become a dear friend, and shares my desire to “make something, anything, happen, right now!” and so when she said to meet her at the creek with my camera, i dutifully packed my camera, a couple of apricots, my water bottle and a jumper and leapt onto my bike

her desire was to co-create something with a vintage feel, like leah senior film clips. my desire was to make a documentary in which we ourselves were implicated, like agnes varda movies. we also shared the desire to get home to my house and eat something. 

and so this unfolded.. i’m interested to continue this thesis of ‘friend hang as movie,’ curious what might emerge. this guy viewable: here

why does anyone do anything really? hard to say.. i think sometimes for me it’s partially a linguistic motivation.. words fitting together that bit too well to resist / in this case, video poetry becomes videoetry, a portmanteau which i seemed to explore thrice in the meandering beginning of 2018 where i was venturing curiously over to canada to spend some time with ross

also we got ‘things aren’t still’ from a sleepy lunch break, the mission statement of ‘i create’ and a couple real throwbacks to ‘relaxation station’ and ‘special spot,’ from an energised time in 2014 when something really wanted to burst forth . a total of seven poems, given life in the video setting . nice
